Henri Emile Benoît Matisse was born in a tiny, tumbledown weaver's cottage on the rue du Chêne Arnaud in the French textile town of Le Cateau-Cambrésis on the last night of the year, December 31, 1869. Matisse's ancestors had lived in this area for centuries before the social and industrial upheavals of the nineteenth century. His father, Émile Hippolyte Matisse, was a grain merchant whose family were weavers. His mother, Anna Heloise Gerard, was a daughter of a long line of well-off tanners. that he would always love painting more than her. In 1892, when he was 23 he had become so interested that he was ready to give up being a lawyer and study art and painting full time. He made that drastic decision and having given up his law career, he went to Paris to study art. Back home, he studied at the Académie Julian and became a student of William-Adolphe Bouguereau. Matisse stayed for a year until he left because of his disappointment of the style within the academy. He then trained with Gustave Moreau, an artist who focused on more progressive leanings. The rest was history as Henri began painting still-lives and landscapes in the traditional Flemish style, at which he achieved proficiency. Matisse was under the category of a Fauve, which meant he was inclined to pictures of nature and was one of the three artists who helped to define the revolutionary developments in the plastic arts in the early decades of the 20th century.
