Heroes

In the words of Lucy Hughes-Hallett in her book Heroes, a hero is a “dynamic, syductive” person that is “associated with courage and integrity and a disdain for cramping compromises.” With this writers and poets have described and told stories of the past. History’s heroes had a way of being a civilization’s saving grace in times of need and were idolized, whereas today what people call heroes are nowhere near the true meaning. The public has perverted the word and has yet to realize that their heroes are no more than role models.

whereas a desperate, fighting for survival civilization looks to someone to lead. “It is desperation that prompts people to crave a champion, a protector, or a redeemer and, having indentified one, to offer him their worship.” (Hughes-Hallett 4). The great men of old were not always necessarily the good guy. “Virture is not a necessary qualification for heroic status: a hero is not a role model. On the contrary, it is of the essence of a hero to be unique and therefore inimitable.” (Hughes-Hallett 4). Heroes have something to stand for and defend, and noramally do this with courage and bravery, because of this they become heroic. They do not go with the cramping compromises. An example would be pirates. They defend their beliefs with a hard vigor, confidence and a type of greatness; yes they may be wrong, but they do not fall without a fight for what they believe. “Most heroes are rebels.
