Arthur Miller wrote the play "The Crucible" as a warning to the public that people must realize and accept their responsibilities so that another outbreak of hysteria will not transpire.
Miller dealt with McCarthyism, or the red scare, first hand. He was accused of being a communist and asked to name names of other communists. The play reflects this experience in many ways; for example Reverend Hale is prodding Abigail for a confession, but she refuses to admit herself as sold to the devil. "Hale: Why are you concealing? Have you sold yourself to Lucifer?" and Abigail replies "I never sold myself! I'm a good girl! ...

deserve swift and certain punishment. Their acts are despicable. Unfortunately, a new form of McCarthyism is welling up in the aftermath of this crime, and it is despicable, too.
Ignoring the pleas of grieving father Dennis Shepard not to "use [his son] Matt as part of an agenda," homosexual organizations have rushed to exploit young Shepard's tragic death in Wyoming. A number of gay, lesbian, bisexual and "transgendered" groups are blaming anti-gay organizations; the Family Research Council; and other pro-family, Christian organizations for this heinous assault. Many in the media have joined in the slander, making charges that ignore both common decency and simple reality. This is precisely what happened in the crucible; the unnecessary hype, and the accusations based on almost nothing.
