To acknowledge humor in the Holocaust isn’t discrediting the horror of the event, in fact it even enhances it in some cases. It humanizes the account even further and brings the pain more comprehendible. Three works of the Holocaust that employ humor in ranging uses and types are Life is Beautiful which use fantastical humor, Jakob the Liar in which satirical humor is used, and Night where gallows humor and distraction is present.
Life is Beautiful was directed by BLAHBLAHBLAH and has been a fore runner in Holocaust accounts blasted for disrespect and untruthful representation. But the movie is not a documentary of the Holocaust or a biography of a survivor, it is a comedy. This is not to re-propose the convenient stereotype of "the good Italians even when fascist." Puncturing this idyllic image is necessary, but so is recognizing that there is some truth to the stereotype. Anti-Semitism did not enter official fascist ideology until race laws went into effect in 1938. This representation of excluding the importance of Jewish race also portrays the fact that the people in concentration camps were typical people. They were our neighbors, coworkers, friends, mothers, and fathers. They were people, a fact that the normalcy of the beginning of the movie drives home.
