Many parents do not stop and think about their child’s education. Perhaps, they should. It is one of the most important decisions a parent will make for their child. There are many choices of schooling: public school, private school, on-line school, satellite school, and . In our family, we have decided that was the best of all the options. For the last several years, has been the fastest growing educational alternative in this country. Estimates of its growth rate are approximately 20% annually. or public schooled children. Homeschooled children outperform other students by 30-37 percentile points in all subjects. In grades 1-4, children perform an average of one grade level higher. In 5th grade, the gap begins to widen and by 8th grade, they average four grade levels ahead. Family race and income, child’s gender, and parent’s education does not seem to affect the test scores for homeschooled children as it does for public and private school children. Among white homeschooled children, the average reading score percentile was 87 and math was 82. In minority students, it was 87 in reading and 77 in math. Their white counterparts, those in public school, scored 61 in reading and 60 in math. Their minority counterparts scored 49 in reading and 50 in math. As a whole, boys do slightly better in math and girls do slightly better in reading in both homeschooled and non-homeschooled children. Homeschooled boys scored 84 in math compared to girls 79.
