Horse Ethics

My Horse, My Angel

Tall, dark and handsome with a regal spirit. Not what anyone else would have said about the horse standing at the auction that day, but that’s exactly what I saw. My horse is a tall thoroughbred who was severely underweight, and going through the auction.
For those unfamiliar with the current plight of today’s horses, it is likely that if you send a horse to the auction you are sending it to a slaughter plant in Canada or Mexico. With the closing of the United States Plants this is the alternative to the meat sellers.

one bid on a mare with many tumors. I felt so bad for her that I bid $25.00 and bought her. The tall thoroughbred went through later and the killer bought him. I did not bid because I had already rescued the mare, however I could not let this horse go to slaughter.
I spoke with the “killer”, paying $100.00 over the $46.00 that he paid and took the horse. I put him on a feed program to revive his struggling system. I wanted as much history as I could find and on the paperwork from the seller was her number. I called and found out that she hated this horse, which was given to her by someone who no longer wanted him. She felt he was aggressive to people and other horses and he had a terrible work ethic. He was a racehorse with a decent track record, then jumped and a dressage horse. He was labeled “a bad horse”. I didn’t agree.
