This is a three page paper about how the Native American Indians adapted to the winters in North American. There are four references used for this paper.

Introduction

The Indians of North America employed various methods to survive the harsh winters. It is interesting to look at these methods, along with the sleds used by these people for transportation.

Shelter and Food

The Indians who lived in Canada, as well as those who lived near the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans were adept in surviving the harsh winters. One of the most important fundamentals needed was appropriate housing. Many of the Native American Indians lived in teepees constructed of ...

Indian tribes built wigwams, which were dome-shaped and "made of woven mats, barks or animal hides (unknown, 1996)", as protection from the winter weather. The main thing these shelters had in common was they protected the Indians from freezing during the winters of the North.

The Indians survived by hunting, fishing, drying shellfish and gathering a variety of berries which they "smashed, dried into cakes, and stored for later use (http://www.cabrillo.cc.ca.us/~crsmith/noamer_nwcoast.html)." They also stored the roots the bracken fern, camas and wapato. The Indians depended on the fur of animals for warmth, and their meat for substance. This meat was either eaten fresh or preserved by smoking or drying.

Clothing and Accessories

The Indians watched the buffalo and noticed they had padded legs, which prompted them to make snowshoes from animal skins as a means to travel over the deep snow. The Indians also found they had trouble seeing when the sun was reflected ...
