During the 1800's in the United States, racism increased at a rapid rate. On December 18[th], 1865, the Thirteenth Amendment officially abolished slavery. Many white Americans did not approve and would not recognize blacks as equals or citizens within the country. Almost immediately after the ratification of the amendment, black codes, further becoming Jim Crow laws, were drafted and put in place. Former Confederate states adopted these laws to restrict African Americans and ensure that they would remain segregated, commonly known as "separate but equal". This clause allowed blacks who could not read or did not own land to vote only if their father or grandfather had voted before 1867; of course, little to no blacks were allowed to vote before 1867 (History.com Editors, "Jim Crow Laws," February 28, 2018, https://www.history.com/topics/early-20th-century-us/jim-crow-laws.). Blacks also were not allowed to be in the same public areas as whites beginning in the 1890s. Schools, water fountains, buses, stores, work places, and many more were all separated by "White Only" and "Colored" signs. Often times blacks would not be able to find convenient areas because "White Only" signs heavily outnumbered "Colored Signs". White only places would often be more convenient, cleaner, and well protected. This would create an unsafe environment if both races were to clash in the same area.
