Holden Caulfield and Holly Hogan are two teenagers completely different, not only their gender and age separate them but also the time in which they were brought up which is immensely contrasting. According to Dr. Vikram Patel (2007), deficient mental health is often associated with low academic achievement. Holly and Holden for different reasons are two dreadful students. Holden hates everybody at school because he is convinced that he is surrounded by phonies, he also claims that the only subject that he enjoys and makes an effort to get good marks, is English, consequently he is an awful student in the rest of subjects which he considers boring and useless: "That is all I know about the Egyptians. I can't seem to get very interested in them [...]. It is all right with me if you flunk me though as I am flunking everything else except English anyway" (Salinger,1951,2). Regarding Holly, she has been living in the foster home Templeton House since a very young age, so her education is not what we would call excellent: "But school, Holly. You never go.
