but if you put down a book without any feeling at all, what was so great about it? In my opinion when you put down a great book you should be yearning for another chapter, excited or shocked by the happenings, or enthralled by the new doors the book opened in your mind. In order to feel this way the characters need to seem very real to you; even if the book is fantasy the decisions they make and the situations they are involved in should flow and make sense. One should be able to feel the characters’ emotions throughout the book and should feel connected to them in a way that makes you almost see the characters as your friends. Other people may disagree, but if these reasons aren’t true, why do we read? Shouldn’t we get some kind of charge out of it or a greater sense of understanding? When I read Huck Finn, I experienced none of these feelings, but enjoyed reading it nonetheless.

The thing we must remember when reading Huck Finn however is that Twain was a satirist, so the novel was not intended to speak out against the horrors of slavery; Twain merely wanted to write a sequel to one of his novels to relish in his memories of boyhood on the Mississippi. It seems as though the novel just happened to involve a runaway slave because a fugitive slave was a good prop to create obstacles for Huck to overcome.
