Human Existence and Achieving Happiness

I. Every agent acts for an end.

Every agent acts for an end, because ends are essentially causal and because no agent acts without free will and intent. The agent always directs the faculty of will or reason toward an intended end. For example, a hungry person will peel and eat a banana with the intent of satisfying hunger. In this case, the end is the sense of satisfaction that comes from the elimination of hunger. Without that end in mind, the person would not eat. The desire to eat naturally arises from the desire to stave off hunger.

II. Happiness is the ultimate end, or goal, of human existence.

resources. These things can cause great discomfort or dissatisfaction. However, to care for the sick loved one is an act performed with happiness as the end result, the spiritual happiness that arises from altruistic behavior. Selfless acts can also directly cause another's happiness.

III. Happiness cannot be based on the accumulation of material goods.

True happiness does not depend on material goods or any other mundane matter. A person can secure massive amounts of wealth: have fine cars, a large home, and millions of dollars in the bank. However, this same person can be spiritually bankrupt by not living in accordance with his or her true will. This true will is to achieve happiness that is independent from any material variable. A poor person can be truly happy because he or she can cultivate a relationship with God and live a good life.
