The ideas relating to power and gender explored in `The Hunger Games'

`The Hunger Games' is a dystopian novel by author Suzanne Collins. Throughout the novel she has developed numerous examples of power and has challenged the stereotypical masculine and feminine traits as she establishes certain characters and settings. The idea of power is displayed through a variety of examples such as the Capitols power of governance, the rebellious action of the people from the districts and the general and stereotypical idea of gender has been challenged throughout the novel.

then lead to the `Dark days' (p.21). He talks about how the Hunger Games were created by the Capitol as a dictatorial measure to `taking the kids from our districts, forcing them to kill each other while we watch' (p.22). Katniss further explains how the Hunger Games are a `yearly reminder' (p.21) -brought forth by the Capitol- of what is to be expected from the districts and to remind them that the rebellion should never be repeated. The capitol ensures that the games are designed in a manner to encourage selfishness. They want a divided community. The message is clear when Katniss states about Peeta `Maybe it's better, if he's gone already.' (p.185). The Capitol is parading it's power by showing the Districts that they can kill innocent children as punishment and the people from the Districts can do nothing to stop them. This evidently shows the Capitols ominous power.
