Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a novel that was written by the author's experience in World War II, which had a profound effect on his view of humanity and the evils of which it was capable. This essay will be commenting on the importance of extract in developing the themes of Savagery and Civilization. The conflict between the instincts of civilization and savagery is brought out using literary devices such as personification and simile.

The use of simile has helped the author to describe the boys better and in a more clear way. The first example of a simile is one patch touched a tree trunk and "scrambled up like a bright squirrel" (page 43). This simile is comparing the fire to a bright squirrel. Squirrels crawl up trees quite fast and this foreshadows that the fire will spread around the whole island very fast. This also foreshadows that the evil in the boys will spread fast as they will loose their innocence and will become savages. The second simile was the flames, as though they were a kind of wild life, "crept as a jaguar creeps on its belly" (Page 44).
