The Innocence Of Oedipus By J. T. Sheppard: Reactions And Emotions Of The Audience

The Innocence of Oedipus by J. T. Sheppard describes the reactions and emotions of the audience to Oedipus and to his actions. It describes the differences as to how the character is portrayed to the common man as well as the educated man of the times. Oedipus is in fact a good man, who was “the unfortunate man who had committed an unintentional crime.” Sheppard states his philosophy of a good man. “Of the best it may be said that they are in a sense ‘good’ since there is nothing ‘shameful’ in their intentional and purposed deed and thought. But even so, they are not secure. Perfection, if calamity comes, is not possible.” “A man may be guilty through no fault of his own, and no man, however excellent in intention and in act, no man, even, however blest by fortune or the gods, achieves and keeps perfection.” This justifies the actions of Oedipus in the eyes of the Athenians and by Sheppard.
