In Greek mythology, the interaction between gods and mortals is very prevalent in all literary works. The play Agamemnon is no different. Throughout this play the role of the various gods is crucial in understanding the actions and motivations of the characters even though they do not appear in the play. Many of the characters in the play mention various gods’ names in order to survive or get something from them. Many of the character’s actions are influenced by the mere mental presence of them. This was not the only situation where Agamemnon chose someone else’s wishes over his families. He has also sacrificed his daughter in order to appease the gods and make sure that his people would not suffer. This also shows the power of the gods and how Agamemnon will react to situations. He will not put his family above the good of the community. He will always try to please the gods and fulfill their wishes. His relationship with the gods is one where he does everything in his power to please them and knows the destruction that they can cause if they are not pleased with an individual. Whether she gets it or not does not concern her because she does not feel as though she is committing any type of sin. This demonstrates once again how Clytaemestra uses the gods to serve her own purpose. In her own mind she feels as though she has no choice but to kill Agamemnon because of destiny and that by doing this she will be pleasing the gods, when in reality all she is doing is pleasing herself and Aegisthus, which is consistent with her character.
