Abstract: Cytisus Scoparius or Scotch Broom, is a serious weed of pastoral systems, natural ecosystems and plantation forestry, which has become invasive in the Pacific Northwest (Potter, K.J.B., 2009, p.1), as well as many other places. Scotch Broom is a shrub in the pea family and generally grows 1-2 meters in height and has green stems, small leaves and numerous large flowers that cover the plant. The flowers are usually yellow, but some cultivated varieties of Scotch Broom can have red to white or purple flowers. Their showy flowers are in a shape characteristic to the pea family, with a “wing” petal to each side of an overarching upper “banner” petal and a lower “keel” petal, curved like a boat’s underside. Most of its photosynthesis takes place in its green stems rather than then its leaves. Scotch Broom got its name because it is commonly used in Scotland to make brooms (Boersma, p.33).
