Jane Eyre - On Equal Grounds

Throughout the novel Jane Eyre, Jane is locked in a struggle to find her place in the world, and to establish herself as a powerful person. There are many obstacles that stand in Jane’s way in this quest for power, including her social standing and her gender. Jane wants there to be equality among men and women, especially between her and Rochester. Through Jane’s power struggle, Brontë is trying to show that it is important to have equality in a marriage, in order to be happy in a marriage.

She does not really belong to a social class either, because she does not feel like she belongs to any. So she thinks that Rochester is not of the aristocrats’ class, but she “believes he is of [hers]”(204). Jane thinks that if Rochester and other people of this era did not feel so strongly about money being a deciding factor of what class you fall under, she and Rochester would be more equal.
Jane is uncomfortable with her relationship with Rochester when it is unequal. And this is one of the main reasons she did not agree to marry Rochester when he first asked her to. Jane did not feel like it would be smart to marry Rochester when they were on such unequal terms. She tells him that if they “stood at God’s feet, equal”(291), she would have accepted.
