The rule of Joseph Stalin in the Soviet Union was to change Russia into a modern industrial power. He was able to accomplish this by modernizing the Russian economy with the 5-year plan. Stalin increased industrial production and set out to increase agricultural production with his collectivization policy. Stalin carried out purges or the movements against his enemies to ensure that he kept control or the U.S.S.R. The purges were able to increase his control of U.S.S.R and Communist party.

In document 3 you can see by the graph how much production in coal increased after the first five-year plan.
Stalin began attacking kulaks for not supplying enough food for industrial workers. He wanted to eliminate them as a social class as seen in document 4 it tells us he wanted to eliminate them because they wanted to get rid of any capitalist elements from agriculture. He also started thinking of the idea of setting up collective farms. This idea involved small farms joining together to form one large – scale units. By doing this they would by able to afford the latest in machinery. Stalin believed that this policy would also increase production of food.
