The years preceding and following World War II had a profound effect upon the entire world. Especially important to world events were the reigns of four particular leaders, Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Moa Zedong.
Joseph Stalin ruled the U.S.S.R. from 1929 to 1953. Born Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili in 1879, he changed his name when he became a young revolutionary to Stalin, which means 'Man of Steel' (Joseph pg). War II broke out, Stalin agreed to a non-aggression pact with Adolf Hitler in 1939 to avoid a war with Germany (Joseph pg). When Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, Stalin met with Britain and the United States at Tehan, 1943, Yalta, 1945, and Potsdam, 1945, dividing the postwar world into spheres of influence (Joseph pg). Stalin wanted to expand Soviet influence in Asia and secure a territorial buffer zone that had ideologically friendly regimes along Soviet western borders (Joseph pg). With Germany's defeat, Stalin occupied most of Eastern Europe, ensuring Stalinist regimes and believing that socialism would triumph over western imperialism (Joseph pg). When the Communist established the People's Republic of China in 1949, Stalin gave North Korean leader Kim II Sung the okay to attack South Korea in 1950 (Joseph pg).
