Friend, has come to take her away for himself. When she refuses he becomes more and more agitated and shows the predatory nature within himself to the point where he threatens her family if she does not come and Connie reluctantly leaves into the unknown. What happens after the story is completely left up to the reader’s imagination but Oates has left us many theories as to what she was actually writing about.
Oates focused highly on religious aspects in this story. The easiest to pick up on is the fact that Arnold Friend is in fact the Devil himself. The first time we see Arnold he is sitting in his car watching Connie running off with a boy. Arnold then tells her he is going to get her and the weird part her is that no one notices him: ‘“Gonna get you baby”, and Connie turned away again without Eddie noticing anything.’-(Oates-408).
