Our ability to sustain the lives of the terminally ill and permanently unconscious has increased more than ever. Higher longevity rates and the ability to survive life-threatening traumas have come from the advances made through new medical technologies. More people are living these prolonged or extended lives where most would have died quickly from complications or from the inability to eat and drink. While most patients benefit from these measures, there remain others who are left with a slow agonizing death. At what point is it reasonable to terminate a life that is suffering from an incurable disease or when their death is inevitable?

that must be understood. In this country the most widely used right to die policy comes in the form of refusing medical treatment. This term is known as passive euthanasia. This is the allowing of the disconnection of life support equipment or stopping of life-sustaining medical procedures. There have been numerous notable legal battles in the execution of this policy. Such as in 1975, a young woman named Karen Ann Quinlan was in a coma after suffering a respiratory arrest. Her family undertook the legal battle to prove their daughter would not have wanted her life sustained by machines with no hope of recovery. They eventually won and had her disconnected, whereupon she died. Another case was in 1990; a young woman named Nancy Cruzan fell into an irreversible coma after an automobile accident. Her parents fought and won the legal right to remove her feeding tube and allow their daughter to die.
