Arguments can be devised for actions that are predetermined and actions that are carried out by means of an individual’s free will. “An act that is done of our own free will” can be fully defined as an act that one can take up on his/her own part and carry out without regard for a concept of destiny or possibility of a pre-established outcome, whereas “an act that is determined” will fully comply with the two previously mentioned stipulations. Because of these inconsistencies, three arguments have arisen: hard determinism, soft determinism, and libertarianism.

refutes the conflicting ideas of hard determinism by stating that free will and determinism are compatible with one another. Perhaps a “flaw” in soft determinism would be that some would consider the definition of free will to be catered to the definition of determinism; this means that since one concept has been limited in its scope, the other can include all which is not included in the first. From a logical standpoint, the preset definitions mark a clarification not found in hard determinism (this clarification is not sufficient to dismiss the original “flaw”.)
On yet another extreme, libertarianism is the peak of acceptance for free will and rejection of determinism (fairly explained as the opposite of hard determinism).
