blacks must try to overcome racial prejudice and hatred and gain what is rightfully theirs—the right to freedoms that allow them to live, work and go to school, anywhere they want to.

In his, “Letter form the Birmingham Jail”, King “We know through experience that freedom is never given voluntarily by the oppressor…we have waited for over 340 years for our constitutional and God-given rights.” King believed everyone was entitled to equality and justice as part of their innate freedom. He held fast to the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, which guarantee our way of life here in the United States.

Likewise, Gerry Spence is a proponent of freedom, however, he states, “Slavery in any from begins and ends with self…no external circumstance can set us free.” His concept of slavery depicts almost everyone as a slave to something—a job, a need for money, bosses, luxuries, the need for more.
