Martin Luther King and Gerry Spence's Views on Freedom

This term paper will examine and discuss Martin Luther King and Gerry Spence’s views on freedom. Most people are familiar with Martin Luther King and his role in the civil rights movement but the majority of people may not know about Gerry Spence, a noted member of a non-profit law firm in Wyoming, who is also a champion of freedom.

Of course, Martin Luther King’s famous speech, “I have a dream”, epitomizes his views on freedom and what it means for each of us, regardless of color. Dr. King wanted freedom for black Americans who often were not granted the same rights as white Americans. His dream was country where freedom was defined by the color of your skin.

blacks must try to overcome racial prejudice and hatred and gain what is rightfully theirs—the right to freedoms that allow them to live, work and go to school, anywhere they want to.

In his, “Letter form the Birmingham Jail”, King “We know through experience that freedom is never given voluntarily by the oppressor…we have waited for over 340 years for our constitutional and God-given rights.” King believed everyone was entitled to equality and justice as part of their innate freedom. He held fast to the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, which guarantee our way of life here in the United States.
