Life As A Slave

In ancient Egypt, the pharaoh was a central figure in Egyptian life and was worshipped as a god by many Egyptians. The decisions of the pharaoh not only affected his point of view, but also the lives of others, for example; slaves.

Most pharaohs in the ancient times treated their slaves well. Unlike the way slaves were treated in the European expansion, slaves in ancient Egypt were given their freedom. They were allowed to own land, hire servants for themselves, they could even marry those who weren't slaves!

Pharaohs did give many slaves as gifts to generals or priests. Slaves were given as "free labour" to temples, sometimes even to the pharaoh's household. Some ancient texts show that some slaves were volunteers.

The daily life of a slave is very hard. The slave will usually sit on a mat that he share's with his wife and kids. Early in the morning, he would get ready to go work in the village mayor's fields. He'd clothe himself with a course linen kilt and cut his hair short. His wife and kids (as well as himself) would put very little make-up around their eyes. His wife and kids would hurry o make linen for the mayor at a weaving shop.

He'd stand in a line with other men while the mayor's servant counts them, one by one. After the servant has finished counting, female slaves would hand out a small breakfast, usually a small bag of bread and skins of water for them to have while they work.On their way o the fields, the eat their bread and ...
