Unification Speech

During the time of the civil war between the north and the south, Mr. Lincoln gave short speeches to tell the nation what his expectation of the war is. Mr. Lincoln gave this short speech in hope of helping a divided nation begin the process of healing. Lincoln spoke about what the war had done to this nation with sadness while pointing out the triumph of the end of slavery. to use repetition with words like "dedicated" throughout the address to convey to the audience what his dedicated task is- unifying the nation (1) (sentence pattern 10). Lincoln uses such neutral diction to convey to the audience that unifying the nation is a work in progress and both sides have to be committed to the cause. He also mean to say that a considerable amount of lives were lost during the war and those living should dedicate themselves toward ending the war. Lincoln repeated these words to emphasis the need of unification to the audience.
In his second inaugural Address, Lincoln employs the use of diction to unify both sides through what they have in common: the same religion (Sentence pattern 3). When Lincoln used words like "Both read the same bible" and "Pray to the same God" he is trying to show a common ground between both parties (2).
