The story, “The Rocking Horse Winner” written by D.H. Lawrence, is a picture describes how relationship in the family is affected by money, material gain and social position. Paul, a young boy in the story and his family are not happy at all since money is a big issue in the family. Paul’s mother thinks that her husband and the children are not lucky therefore she does not have a lot of money. She starts not to love the children and brings cold atmosphere to the family.

In addition, if she has more knowledge and experience in the business environment then maybe she could earn the same amount as her co-worker. For instance, she racks her brains, and tries this thing and the other, but she can not find any success.
Buying expensive things is a good example of materialistic gain in this family because the parents always want to buy more and more expensive things when they don’t have enough money. According to the story when Christmas comes “ when the expensive and splendid toys filled the nursery. Behind the shining modern rocking horse, behind the smart doll’s-house, a voice would start whispering: ‘There must be more money! There must be more money!’ ”.
