Macbeth Themes

While reading throughout William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, more than one theme came across to me. Although “fair is foul, foul is fair,” is the main theme, there are other smaller themes that support it.
In the first act of Macbeth, the three witches set the plot by the prophecy. The prophecy creates ambition for both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. The ambition they gain leads them to plan the death of Duncan. “Yet do I fear thy nature; is it too ful o’ th’ milk of human kindness to catch the nearest way.” (Shakespeare 361 lines 13-15) The witches knowing Macbeth wanted to be King, they knew he wouldn’t hold back on what he must do. Feeling guilty before Macbeth murders Duncan, he envisions a dagger dripping of blood.
