In Martin Luther’s “An Appeal to the Ruling Class of German Nationality as to the Amelioration of the State of Christendom” he states that the Roman Church is altering the truth that is stated in the Bible. Luther states three examples to prove his point. First he states that at all times the church is superior to the secular class. Second Luther says that no matter what the pope is the official interpreter of the Bible because of his appointed position. Finally, the pope is the only one who has the authority to call a council and to decide the necessary consequences of wrongful acts. The pope’s duty is to interpret the Holy Scriptures. The people follow the pope because he has a sincere understanding of the Bible. However there is no proof that the pope has the greatest understanding of the Holy Scriptures. Martin Luther believes that there may be other common people who are just as capable of interpreting the Bible. Luther argues if a “humble person” is just as knowledgeable of the Bible he or she should be followed as well. The pope’s understanding of the Bible should be used in bettering the Christian well being, as stated in Luther’s attack of the third wall.
According to the Roman community, if a wrongful act occurs only the pope has the authority to call a council. Luther feels that the wrongdoing for which the pope summons councils for have little significance, and the more consequential crimes are left for the pope himself to judge.
