One of the incidents that occur in this novel as obstacles for Dak is when he gets hired at a local pickle factory with the hope to make some extra money over summer vacation, but ultimately gets fired and learns that it is not easy to be successful in the “real world.” Near the beginning of the novel, Dak gets a proposal from his father that if he wants to get a job at a local pickle factory. At first Dak thinks it is a joke, but when he realizes it is not a fluke he accepts the offer, but is not as excited to approach the new opportunity into a real job as much as his father is for him.
