The issue of multiculturalism has evolved so that it is included in all aspects of the American social structure. America, as the 'melting pot' of cultural identities, has welcomed a number of different immigrant cultures. It's been said of immigrants, "They were poor. They worked hard. They became assimilated both culturally and economically. The adoption of American ways went along with upward economic mobility" (Anonymous 76). This seems especially true for the Mexican American culture. Cultural issues such as the exploitation of unskilled immigrants, the lessening degree of assimilation and the combination of these factors has lead to a new immigrant 'underclass' that contains a disproportionate number of Mexican Americans.
Mexican immigrants tend to look at the life they left as being limited by the fact that, no matter how hard they worked, they would never be able to earn the same kind of wages they can in the United States.
