In his many plays Chicano playwright Luis Valdez has always showcased the Mexican-American experience and the struggle to be perceived and respected as fellow Americans. His ground-breaking plays were first encapsulated in a work entitled Actos. In his article, "When Sleeping Giants Awaken: Chicano Theatre in the 1960s,” Jorge Huerta describes Valdez’s actos as “skits or sketches.” Actos is a collection of nine short plays that was first published in 1971. and the situations faced by the characters in his plays. He was born to a large migrant family on June 26, 1940 in Delano, California; he is one of ten children. His family moved often due to the planting and harvesting schedule. Despite the hard labor and long hours required of a migrant worker, Valdez was able to graduate from high school and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Jose State University. After graduating from university in 1964, he joined the San Francisco Mime Group, where he learned about “agitprop” theater. In “agitprop” theater, actors make use of political agitation and propaganda to protest against social injustices. This experience would help him a year later when he joined Cesar Chavez and the United Farmworkers Union in their efforts to unionize migrant farmworkers during the Great Delano Grape Strike of 1965.
