Of Mice And Men: Loneliness Of Lennie, Candy, And Curley's Wife



It is my belief that everyone is lonely at some point in their lives. For some people this period may seem like an eternity, for others, it may only last for a few days or weeks at a time. Three characters in the novel "Of Mice and Men" who I feel are lonely are: Lennie, Candy, and Curley's Wife. I have chosen to show you how these very different characters have all suffered the same fate, to be lonely.
Lennie is a big, strong man who is unfortunately mentally handicapped. This mental handicap has caused Lennie to become distant and separated from the rest of the world. Since Lennie is unable to comprehend even the simplest concept he is not allowed to join the other men when they: ...

his time by himself. This makes Lennie very lonely. In being lonely, Lennie wants to be with other people just for the sake of not being by himself. In the novel, this is shown when Lennie visits Crooks and when he allows himself to talk with Curley's Wife. Talking with Curley's Wife caused Lennie to accidentally kill her and therefore Lennie's loneliness eventually leads to him getting into so much trouble that everyone around the ranch wants to have him lynched. For Lennie, loneliness is a very bad thing.
I believe that another character from "Of Mice and Men" who is lonely is the old swamper Candy. Candy is a man who is getting too old and useless to accomplish anything in his current position at the ranch. Candy is very afraid of the boss firing him because if Candy were to be fired he would be even lonelier and would have no place to go.
