“Guys like us, that work on the ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world” (13). George and Lennie, the two main characters in the story Of Mice and Menby John Steinbeck, go from ranch to ranch, trying to find a permanent job without getting fired. Eventually, both men start working in a new ranch located in the Salinas Valley. care of him like a child. For example, Lennie suggests that he could go live alone in a cave since he annoys George too much (12). George then responds with, “I want you to stay with me, Lennie. Jesus Christ, somebody’d shoot you for a coyote if you was by yourself” (13).

Secondly, Lennie is the reason why George is so lonely and alienated from the other men. In the beginning of the story, George goes off on how life would be so easy if Lennie was not around.
