In most cultures, there is one aspect which is valued above the
rest, whether it be education, social status, or any other significant
attribute. In Lewis Lapham’s Money and Class in America, ideas are
produced about the importance of money in America’s culture. It is
obvious, to those who read Lapham’s passage, that he researched thoroughly
the ways we, as Americans, have been brought up differently than the rest
of the world. The way Americans honor what is important is perceived as
ridiculous, by many other cultures, because the only way to be respected
in America is to be wealthy and therefore, powerful.

insane how the majority of Americans see celebrities as heroes instead of
the scientists who try to make the world a better place. The world is run,
not necessarily by the money itself, but the mentality that people have
which makes them crave the power that comes with the pleasure of being
well off.
America’s passion is wealth and the way it can control many aspects
of life. Americans have created a world in which their passion for money
becomes more momentous than all of the greater tasks which were, “achieved
by other societies.” Greed sometimes appears to be the only love of
Americans. No matter what achievements and success other societies have
had, most find money to have greater importance than other civilization’s
life changing achievements. Not only is money a great achievement, in the
American mind, but wealth is the basis for our “spiritual,” stance as well
