Movie Review: Introducing Dorothy Dandridge

The troubled life of Dorothy Dandridge, the first African-American
woman to garner an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress (for CARMEN
JONES) is dramatized in this fine made-for-HBO film from director Coolidge
(RAMBLING ROSE). Gorgeous Berry shines as Dandridge in a role she seems
born to play. Dandridge's close relationship with her manager (Spiner) is
examined, as is her affair with director Otto Preminger, along with her
first marriage to dancer Harold Nicholas, with whom she gave birth to a
mentally disabled daughter. Aside from her personal struggles, the film
also demonstrates the rampant racism of 1950's Hollywood which she had to
endure throughout her short career.

generations more respect and appreciation for where they are
and the people who made it possible. The struggles that Dorthy had to g
through such as the scene where they drained the pool since she touched it
amazed me. I couldn’t imagine having to perform under conditions that I
couldn’t use the facilities around me in the hotel I was staying. The
embarrassment that went along with the pool being drained must have been
enormous. Yet, through her anger she kept her head high and still performed.
This film made it possible in world where I found out in our first
assignment to find information on early black artist is almost impossible
to introduce and educate about one the most amazing women of our times. She
conquered, she inspired and she truly lived her life. She was amazing
person that happened to be a woman , a black woman, and was constantly
being reminded. The prejudice of the 1950’s are amazing. The fact they
asked her to pee in a cup. I truly couldn’t imagine.
