At that time the majority of people living in Texas were Americans and they rejected Santa Anna’s rule. On March 2, 1836, Texas declared its independence from Mexico and after a bloody war between the Texan rebel’s and the Mexican Government it was official. Santa Anna signed treaties recognizing the Texas Republic and establishing the southern boundary of Texas to be the Rio Grande River. However, the Mexican Government did not believe that the treaties signed by Santa Anna should be legitimate and that the Nueces River, not the Rio Grande, was the southernmost border of Texas; this caused the two to be engaged in battles for quite a few years after.
