Nathan Price: The Tale of an Anti-Hero

The Poisonwood Bible, written by Barbara Kingsolver, is the story told by the daughters and mother of a Baptist family, their journey in the Congo in the 1950's, and the problems faced by their father, the anti-hero, Nathan Price. Nathan Price is an example of an anti-hero because he allows his inner problems with himself to control his family and to trouble the village he wanted to help. An anti-hero is someone who is controlling, suffers from inner problems, and is driven by their selfish actions.

control his surroundings ultimately leads to his death. The village who has had enough of his attempts to convert them, drives Nathan away from the village, and into a tower where he burns alive.
Nathan Price also deals with many inner problems that affect his behavior. According to his wife, Orleanna, these problems can be traced back to when he left the war. She mentions in an earlier part of the book that, "he came home with...a suspicion of his own cowardice from he could never recover." Because he escapes the fate of the rest of his platoon, he views himself as a coward, despised by God. He vows never to be a coward again, meaning he will never leave a dangerous situation again without doing the best he can. This inner turmoil he views as bravery is one reason Nathan Price is left in a state of loneliness.
