The topic of nationalism steers my thinking in the way of society becoming one with declining unity and sense of purpose. It is clear that much of our society is segregated by location to varying degrees, simply based on concentrations of peoples in various neighborhoods. It is obviously difficult to maintain one's national identity while attempting to become part of a host country. It would seem that displaying national pride would directly result in perpetuating the differences between people of different cultures; while also desiring to be one unified people. I can somewhat understand both sides of this issue to some degree.

On one hand, why would someone leaving a country voluntarily in search of a different or better way of life need to have his ethnic heritage recognized in the country he is seeking hope and refuge in? I mean, if my ethnic and cultural history are of such high importance to me, why am I leaving the place where they are embraced and recognized already? If it is due to poor social and economic conditions, shouldn't I rather try to do something to improve those conditions in my country of origin? If I were to move to say, Poland, because I no longer wish to tolerate the conditions under which I am living in America, am I to assume that Poland will be more than accomodating to meet my ethnic and nationalist origin needs? That seems self-centered and approaching ethnocentricity to me.
