Nick Carraway is the first character the audience meets in The Great Gatsby. From the first chapter on, Nick makes connections between characters and events that are crucial in helping the story progress. Without Nick being present for so many background events, the reader would not have such a clear and comprehendible reading experience.
Early into the book, Nick lets the reader know why he is such a perfect person to narrate this story. “I’m inclined to reserve all judgments,” (1). Not only is Nick related to each main character in some way, but he does not produce snap opinions about people without good reason. If ...

his audience about this series of events, Nick does a wonderful job of portraying the emotions and personalities of characters. He allows the reader to sense the shallowness of Tom Buchanan, and the hospitality of Gatsby. Nick does not try to disguise Tom’s abusive actions as normal, nor does he condone them. Nick does not waste any time describing characters, as he gives an honest description of Jordan in the first chapter, making her seem slightly snobbish. “… with her chin raised a little, as if she were balancing something on it which was quite likely to fall.” (8).
