his audience about this series of events, Nick does a wonderful job of portraying the emotions and personalities of characters. He allows the reader to sense the shallowness of Tom Buchanan, and the hospitality of Gatsby. Nick does not try to disguise Tom’s abusive actions as normal, nor does he condone them. Nick does not waste any time describing characters, as he gives an honest description of Jordan in the first chapter, making her seem slightly snobbish. “… with her chin raised a little, as if she were balancing something on it which was quite likely to fall.” (8). He becomes friends with Jordan, but he does not make her seem nicer than she is in the beginning of the book. Myrtle, who does nothing as to upset Nick, is not given such a flattering description by him. “Her face … contained no facet or gleam of beauty,” (25).
