Elizabeth Tallent’s “No One’s A Mystery” reflects her view of a male’s ego. In the story a married man, Jack, is having an affair with an eighteen year old girl. Jack needs to feel young, free, and in control. By creating an intimate and inapproate relationship with a young girl, Jack found an escape from his married life.
Jack is an adult, yet he spends his day drinking in his car with his young admirer on her eighteenth birthday. Jack shows us how he is immature, and feels above the law. On the other hand, Jack is having an affair with an underaged girl, drinking while drving and speeding. Jack feels he is above both the law, and above the reins of his wife.
Jack is completely in control of his relationship with the young girl, which is exactly what he wanted. While driving past Jack’s home with the girl, he sees his wife driving.
