One's A Heifer: Story vs Teleplay

In both the short story and the teleplay One's A Heifer there is a similar plot which consists of a young boy setting out on a journey on his own, in search of two calves which are missing from his aunt and uncle s farm. In his search he comes upon the home of Arthur Vickers. He believes Vickers has stolen his calves and is hiding them in a stall, in the back of the barn. He proceeds to spend the night with Vickers, a night full of strange actions and unusual happenings. In the morning, in a mad dash to see inside the stall and to find his calves he puts up a fight with Vicker's, releases his prize stallion and ultimately runs away. boy follows him and hears him say Get back in there. Get! When he returns from the barn he places a bottle of alcohol on the table and begins to drink. These three factors together can only lead to the conclusion that Vickers is running a still in the stall and he is making the woman watch over the fire while he entertains the boy. When he says Nothing you d be interested in it is obvious that the alcohol would not amuse the boy the same way it would an adult. The grin also shows that whatever is behind the stall door is not grim and disgusting, like a dead body or a woman held hostage, but something enjoyable and light, like alcohol. The presence of the still is further proven when the boy hears him speaking to someone in the barn. It is obvious that he is telling the woman to remain in the stall and watch over the still while he distracts the boy.
