boy follows him and hears him say Get back in there. Get! When he returns from the barn he places a bottle of alcohol on the table and begins to drink. These three factors together can only lead to the conclusion that Vickers is running a still in the stall and he is making the woman watch over the fire while he entertains the boy. When he says Nothing you d be interested in it is obvious that the alcohol would not amuse the boy the same way it would an adult. The grin also shows that whatever is behind the stall door is not grim and disgusting, like a dead body or a woman held hostage, but something enjoyable and light, like alcohol. The presence of the still is further proven when the boy hears him speaking to someone in the barn. It is obvious that he is telling the woman to remain in the stall and watch over the still while he distracts the boy.
