In Notes from the Underground the main character is gradually developing throughout the novel. He begins as a confusing, hard to understand man and ends up with many good, rational ideas. You begin to see that he is more intelligent than he wants you to believe. The Underground Man has his perspective on life, which is for once close to the way it really is. He does not contradict his opinion on this topic, so you conclude that he really believes it and is not just speaking to confuse you the way he has before.
People are completely convinced that bad habits can be removed with common sense and science. This is where the Underground man begins to ‘make fun of’ the people who believe life can be ‘calculated and predictable’. Everyone wants to know what will happen before it does, but the Underground Man makes you see how boring it would be.
