The Emancipation Proclamation brought about many social, economic, and political changes to The United States. Most notably, the role of political rights shaped the new freedmen's world as they struggled to define their role in this new society. Reconstruction brought about a strong solidarity amongst the African American community, the ability to use the requirements of the planting season to their own advantage, control of local government in some areas, and the opening up of economic alternatives. Other than these codes, the great experiment of emancipation in a republic was new and aimed to be optimistic. In America, African Americans demanded full participation in the political life of the nation. Nowhere else in the world did blacks achieve a comparable degree of political influence after the end of slavery.
