Cicero in his book "On Obligations" explains how people's behaviors are governed by their keenness to act right as it is an inherent natural tendency. People according to him are obligated to act in a certain manner because they want to cultivate their own interest. In doing so they benefit themselves because once they exchange good words or deeds, they expect the other person honorable enough to do the same for them. explaining the first virtue says that only that which is honorable is good. For example if a soldier is honorable, then he is bound to defend his country and his fellowmen, without consideration for his life, friends or family members. He is honorable because he knows that it is a sacrifice for the majority at the cost of the minority. If he is killed, he would have saved innocent people from being killed; therefore one life versus many is honorable.

Similarly, Cicero also says that virtue is sufficient for happiness. Virtue is basically the natural tendency to do good in a person. Happiness can be understood as the joy resulting from an action or deed. If a person has virtues than he is likely to be happy. For example a teacher who teaches young children is basically honorable because s/he is transferring knowledge to young individuals who would grow up into members of society.
