Oedipus: Innocent By Fate


Oedipus was a tragic hero who’s fate was predetermined by the Gods. His unchangeable fate was determined in two stages that took place at different times in his life. The first stage happened when he was first born. The second stage was when he left his home after consulting an oracle. After the first two stages of his fate took place the horrible truth unravels and everything that he held dear to him are corrupted. Oedipus’s tragic flaw is that he was blinded to the truth and could not see his own guilt.

Consulting an oracle Oedipus is told that he is going to kill his father and marry his mother. In fear of these events taking place he leaves his home, and his fate becomes a reality. Instead of leaving what he was proficied to do he runs right into his fate. On a road leading to Thebes he unknowingly “I know;/ I learned of him from others; I never saw him”(lines 108-109) kills his biological father because he made him angry. He had no control of his fate that lead him to the road where he killed his father. Oedipus, lead by fate, reaches Thebes and fulfills the remaining part of his fate and marries his mother.
Oedipus’s determination to discover the murder of the king leads to the unfolding of his guilt. Oedipus has several dramatic encounters between him and a supporting character who knows, or at least guesses at the truth. The drama is heightened in each of these encounters. Tiresias ...
