It has been said that people can be blinded to the truth. The answer to their question may have been sitting right in front of them all along, yet they could not see it. Associations have been made between being blind and being enlightened. The blind are said to have enhanced senses, even being able to "see" into the future. Blind people may not have physical sight, but they have exceptional vision. In Oedipus The King, Tiresias, the sightless prophet, offers the truth to King Oedipus and Jocasta. his real parents. While fleeing, he encountered Laius and killed him. He correctly answered the riddle of the Sphinx, finally became the king of Thebes, and later married Jocasta. Oedipus fulfilled the prophecy without even knowing it. Thebes now had to endure a plague, and a prophet put the blame on a polluter of the land of Thebes. Oedipus called on Tiresias, and Tiresias clued him that the polluter was the king. As Oedipus searched further and further, he unearthed that he was the polluter Tiresius spoke of and that the prophecy had become reality. When Oedipus finally discovered the truth, he was so distressed that he ran pins into his eyes, blinding himself. He had been blinded to the truth in two significant ways during his earthly existence.
Oedipus was blind in more then one way. He was blind to the truth concerning his own vitality. He had no idea that his real parents were indeed Laius and Jocasta. He was so blind that he questioned and got angered at anyone ...
