"The American Dream"

The American Dream is the social idea that if a person works hard and drives a straight path, they will be rewarded with equality, democracy, and material prosperity.

I agree with the statement "Curley and his wife are victims of the American dream just as much as George and Lennie." Curley and his wife could very well be living the American dream, but they aren't in love with each other, so they can't. Curley's wife doesn't have any desire to be with him. "Well, I ain't told this to nobody before. Maybe I ought'n to. I don't like Curley, he ain't a nice fella."

his wife have everything they need to live out the American dream, except the most important thing - Love. George and Lennie have the bond to fulfill the American dream, just not the resources. Someone like Curley will never be happy, even though his life is great compared to the rest of the men on the ranch. He is too mad and jealous of a human being. The whole idea of the American dream is just a concept, an unreachable goal. If George and Lennie had gotten the money together, Lennie wouldn't have had to die. George could have then lived a happy life. "Nobody ever gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land" - Crooks. Turns out the most overlooked and unappreciated guy at the ranch was right.

Reading "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck, has taught me that anyone can fall victim to The American Dream. But, some people could be living it and still not be happy because of the people they chose to live it with.
