In Ken Kesey's novel, ``The Cuckoos Nest'', there is a strong physiological aspect on how both McMurphy and Nurse Ratched affect the ward. I believe this is directly because of their pasts. Even though their pasts were completely different, both of them affect the ward in drastic ways.

With McMurphy's past as a gambler and a con man, it creates a great leader for the men to follow him away from the suppressed life with Ratched in control. It shows that Ratched doesn't believe men can run around unless fully clothed because their bodies are, in basic sense, something to be ashamed of. McMurphy does all he can in order to prove to them that isn't true and Ratched is trying to degrade them.

On the other hand, Nurse Ratched is completely opposite of McMurphy. She grew up with strict values and a sense of order and control. She was an army nurse for the navy so the training required had molded her into the woman we know in the book. She believes that if there isn't complete control then it's broken, `` The Big Nurse tends to get real put out if something keeps her outfit from running like a smooth, accurate precision-made machine.
