What would be the turning point of World War II? Allies had been preparing for the this day for months and the day had been scheduled a day before, but it was cancelled due to the harsh weather. It had to be a perfect day; a full moon, not too dark so the troops could see and not too bright so the enemies could not see the paratroopers. ( Bard 1). was to take down the German defenses on five beaches and eventually drive the German Army out of France. The beaches were Gold, Sword, Juno, Utah and Omaha ( D-DAY 1). The Canadians were to take Juno beach, the Americans, Utah, and Omaha, and the British, Gold and Sword ( Isserman 129).
Meanwhile the Allies continued to prepare for the invasion; “troops practiced arranged scenarios, rangers climbed cliffs, engineers destroyed beach obstacles, quartermasters stockpiled thousands of supplies and infantrymen waded through the English surf as each honed the skills necessary for the invasion’s success” ( Neson 2). There was also a big effort from the French Resistance which disrupted the Germans, and blew up key facilities ( Neson 1).
