Othello and Much Ado About Nothing
William Shakespeare was a playwright genius of his time. He could rewrite a play, display the same series of events in an alternative way, and still create a masterpiece to be carried throughout several generations. Two of the plays he successfully did this with were Othello and Much Ado About Nothing. The themes, characters, and plots are consistent with only a few minor alterations in order to keep the dramatic piece interesting.

With every wonderful play comes interesting characters. The characters in each play are manipulative, loving, scared, gullible, and much more. Iago and Don John fall into the manipulative, controlling, and scheming category. Both characters want something they don’t have. Iago wants the military position that was given to Cassio, and Don John wants the love of his military brothers that has been given to the new comer, Claudio. These villains apply their “talents” by using the events and people around them to their advantages. Iago becomes second in demand by convincing Othello of Desdemona’s unfaithfulness, where as Don John uses the events around him to persuade Claudio and Don Pedro that Hero is not a worthy gentlewoman. The loving, gullible, and scared characters of the two plays are Othello, Desdemona, Roderigo, Cassio, Benedick, Beatrice, Hero, and Claudio.
